... Copper's Story

Leland & Ashley,

Just wanted you to know that Ron and I moved to a house with a real yard. Copper is in absolute heaven. He has an invisible fence, so he stays in and the neighborhood kids come to play and visit with him often. He has so much fun running laps around the house, he is such a happier dog now that he has a real yard to play in. Just thought we would update you. Lori & Ron Gambrel

Tugs

...Tugs's Story

AFHS

Lorraine Quinlan and husband Tom Gwinn drove 16 hours round trip from Welland, Ontario in Canada near Niagara Falls to adopt Tugs after seeing her photo on PetFinder.com. They were thrilled with the copper-colored Shiba-Inu dog and gave the shelter an additional donation. They sent a photo of Tugs visiting Niagara Falls…in the background is Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side! From Lorraine… I bring Tugs as he is now called to work with me every day. All my customers love him because he is the most loving and affectionate dog I have ever had. They can't believe I got him from a humane society. I want to thank you for taking such good care of him for us till we could get to Ohio. After all this time my one cat Smiley still hisses at him, Thumper sleeps with him and my new cat that is about as big as he is get his head put in Tugs's mouth, tolerates it for a while, then gets up on his hind paws and 2 fists him. It is a riot to watch them all together. My cats are not declawed but they don't ever use them on him. He is such a blessing to our home. Again thank you. Lorraine Quinlan.

Ocho

...Ocho's Story

AFHS

In the summer of 2005, we had an aging dog that I knew that sad day was coming. It was then that we decided to look to adopt. We found Smokey, who was an owner surrender and had spent three months waiting for adoption. At the time, we had a little girl three, and a two month old newborn. It took some convincing from the lady of the household, as this would require time that she did not have. He became a member of our family and gave us some trying times. The training sessions were short and frequent in our back yard and plenty of structured exercise. The obedience got better and better and became a calming dog for other dog aggressive dogs. Protection training was started last may and was a carry over from his obedience. Since then, he has achieved his gdt and idt3 through irondog, and his protection dog certificate through protection sports association. All protection work is heavily emphasized on obedience. He is a dog that we can take anywhere, nursing homes, preschools, festivals, etc. could not ask for a better house dog. Last October, we had found a home for our second foster and decided to foster "ocho" . As an American pitbull terrier, many shelters will automatically euthanize. However, the Humane Society places a few of these great dogs up for adoption. I can honestly say, Ocho is the easiest dog we have ever had in the house, so good he was officially adopted into our family. He is now my demo dog when volunteering at the shelter obedience classes. Dog or human aggression has never been an issue. His favorite things are giving love and playing tug. He is on his way of changing the image the pitbull has received. And for all of you pitbull doubters out there, I challenge you to put him to the test. Joe Parks and family

A Big Success Story and a Heartfelt Thank You !

I'm almost 50 and have had cats, non-stop since my college years. The sad part of my story is that we'd lost our two twelve year old cats over the last six months; one due to cancer and the other to grief. It was my four children's first experience witnessing and resolving the loss of pets. I promised them that after our February vacation, we'd begin to check shelters in the hope of obtaining two young kittens. I've always adopted kittens in the eight week age range and have always believed this to be the reason why our pets have always been friendly, well trained and loving. Our vacation done, we began the search here in Indiana for young kittens and they weren't to be found...not the season! We were going through 'cat withdrawl' and "I'd promised". On a Saturday, I called the Butler County shelter, received directions, grabbed the cat carrier and raced down the highway to find our new kittens. Alas, after several wrong turns, we arrived to find the shelter had been closed for a half hour. There was hope however. The light was still on and someone was inside and...they let us in, agreeing to assist us! No young kittens! We were crushed. Our adoption assistant was helpful, understanding and kind. He reminded us that all young kittens grow up rather quickly to become older kittens and soon adult cats. As we listened, someone was trying to get our attention...a sleek, playful, black and white older kitten. Out of the cage she came purring and clinging to us as we held her in our arms. Here's the best part of the story. We've had our cat for one week and I must tell you that she's playful, well behaved, friendly and loving. She is spayed, had shots, microchipped and an integral part of our family. Here's a BIG thank you to the staff at the shelter for educating and encouraging a cat lover who thought she had it all figured out!

Bandit

...Bandit's Story

AFHS

Sorry it took so long. Here are the pictures we have of Bandit at home with us. Rylie is his favorite. He sleeps in bed with her at night. About 2 weeks ago we got tired of him shedding and took him to the groomers to be shaved! We love having Bandit, although we think we have figured out the reason he was given up. He has seperation anxiety. It is usually not a problem for us, he is only alone about an hour a day. We got him a kennel and although he doesn't really like going in there, he does alright. Keep up the good work you guys do. If I can ever convince my husband to let us get another dog, we will come back and get Bandit a sister. Love, The Phillips Family

Kato

...Kato's Story

Hi!

Kato, previously known as Oreo, was adopted from the PetSmart at Bridgewater Falls, in Hamilton, Ohio in July 2007. He was at the shelter a short time before he went to live at PetSmart. When I saw him, I fell in love. I had been looking for a cat to accompany me to graduate school (and help relieve some stress!) and I knew when I first saw him he was the one. He was so beautiful and sweet, but also liked to play. Two days later I took him home. Kato is such a wonderful cat. He loves to play (especially with his cat nip mouse!) He is not a fan of being held, but definitely has his own ways of showing affection. He will come in every morning when my alarm goes off, and lay in bed with me for a few minutes. When I get home from school, he always runs up to greet me and rub against me, purring as loudly as possible. Everyone who has met this cool, laid-back cat knows just how special he is. He is great with children (very tolerant!) and with other cats. He just wants to play and sleep. Thanks so much for introducing me to Kato. He is the best cat I could have ever adopted, and I am very grateful for that :)

Benny

...Benny's Story

Leland

My family and I couldn't thank you enough for introducing us to the new addition of our family, "Benny". Although I have grown up around Staffordshire Terriers and American Pit Bulls throughout my life and know that they have taken the "bad wrap" instead of their irresponsible owners, being around Benny for about 10 minutes would show anyone that they are just as gentle as any other breed. Benny is a wonderful dog that has not only captured the hearts of my three boys, but has also gained "soulmate" status with our 5 year old Yorkie, Oliver and not to mention my wife, Laurie. She absolutely loves him and says that I couldn't have picked a better dog. We could never express how much we appreciate the service you guys provided for us. If we would have known that we would be this happy with Benny, we would have ALWAYS gotten our pets from your organization. When we adopted Benny, we gained a completely housebroken, lovable, gentle and caring animal that just needed a second chance. We will never take Benny for granted. Adopting a pet is SOOOOO much better than puppy training!! LOL! My wife and I have vowed to do whatever we can to support your organization and mission! We will definitely stay in touch... I have attached several pictures for you to see not only how happy you have made us but also how happy you have made Benny! Take care and God bless, Shane, Laurie, Cody, Jake and Christopher

Snowball, aka Simon aka Roger

...Snowball, aka Simon aka Roger's Story

Hi Leland,

Snowball, aka Simon aka Roger (Snowball was a little hard for my son to say, so he was renamed once again after Roger Daltrey who played the deaf and blind Pinball Wizard in 'Tommy'!), is doing FANTASTIC! He goes up and down the front steps better than I do (yes, I'm a bit of a klutz). He knows where all the food and water bowls are, although his favorite engrained habit is to dump the food bowls and shove all the kibble into a pile on the floor, leaving it for later (I'm trying to find new untippable food bowls). He's full of energy when he comes out of his crate, but goes in without a push. He's had his rabies shot (didn't even flinch) and has a shiny new green 2008 license to match his 'sisters'. He's getting along better with them, too, although still has a squabble now and them, especially if he's hungry. I still haven't been able to get him to take a dog biscuit, though, even when I put peanut butter on it. He took his heartworm medicine with cheese, but I'm trying to find a treat for training. He doesn't pull on the leash, but I had to carry him into and out of the vet; I'd like to be able to work on that a bit more. He walks all around the yard, but I pretty much let him go where he wants. When it's time to come back in, he'll sometimes gently take hold of my fingers with his mouth and let me lead him that way, but he feels comfortable in the yard. In the house, he'll lie on my lap, or on my ottoman, but his favorite spot is on the tile in the walkwaly between the kitchen and the living room so everyone has to step around or over him - that way he doesn't miss anyone or any of the action! He'll play with some of the dog toys, chewing on some or bopping it away from himself so he has to find it. Twice he's had to wriggle under the counter stools to retrieve the tennis ball he pushed under there - but he knew it was there! The other dogs will usually just wait patiently until he's finished playing with a toy until they take it back - Wabash will pull a toy away from Lucy, and vice versa, but they wait until Roger's done. Who needs television when I have my own wonderful reality program right in my own house?!?!?!?! I finally got a cable to download pics from my camera; my stepson took the family ones, and I don't have time to retouch them, so my apologies for reduced quality - I just wanted to get them out to you. Chow! Sue

Snowball, aka Simon aka Roger
Joe

...Joe's Story

Hi All! This dog was in the Humane Society system for six months. Was also adopted and returned three times!!

Leland

Hello!

Sorry it's taken me so long to update. I was going to call you back, but I accidently erased your message instead of saving it. I was planning to send in some pictures and a card to update everyone who cared for our pups while before they made it home to us! But things have been busy and I haven't developed the pictures yet. Joe is fantastic. People must have been insane to give him up multiple times. Sure, he marked in our house for the first couple weeks, but other than that he has been perfect (and is now perfectly "potty" trained). I don't think his prior owners wanted a dog at all- because he is such a great dog that I don't see why they would have brought him back. He is so so so sweet- of course, I don't have to tell you guys that. It was so nice for everyone to be so happy for Joe's adoption. Joe must have been the rockstar of animal friends! The receptionist from the animal care center actually cried when I went to pick him up! It was so sweet. He is an amazing dog. Either he is naturally very timid or he has been abused in one (or all) of his homes. He gets so scared when our voices raise (even when playing) or when we make any sudden moves he acts like we are going to hit him. It's so sad. He is starting to loosen up as time goes on and realizes we aren't going to hurt him. But we do have an active household with a 2 and 5 yr old. My 5 yr old daughter is his favorite. He sleeps with her and is very sweet with her. He is not a licking kind of dog but always wants to give her kisses. It's too cute! Savannah (who we adopted at the same time) is doing well, but not quite as easy as Joe. But that's ok, she is only 16 months old so she has a lot of energy. We had one instance where she bit my 2 yr old, but we realized that she was just trying to engage her in play like she does Joe (nipping at his cheeks). She hasn't done it since then, and we just keep them seperated when we can't supervise the playtime. We went from 0 pets to 2 dogs over night so there have been adjustments and learning experiences, but we are a family. Joe and Savannah aren't coming back ;). We have a fenced in yard for them to roam about when they go outside, so they are in heaven. You should have seen them when I first let them outside- they sprinted around for a long time- they were so excited to finally run. Anyway- I just wanted to update you. Keep up your good work. I am thankful for all that you guys do at animal friends. It was an amazing, and overwhelming experience the day we adopted our dogs (the day of that big bust). It was also my first time at the shelter in Trenton. I took a peak in one of the rooms with the dogs and I started to cry. I don't know how you guys do what you do but I am thankful. Sincerely, Rachel Carlson (and Don, Morella, Myleigh, Joe, and Savannah)

Kasey

...Kasey's Story

Hi, this is Carolyn who adopted Kasey (the dog with the bad eye) one year ago.

Here is a picture of him with his "sister" Taffy; as you can see, he is doing very well! I thought you might like to hear sometime from those who adopt. We have had him for one full year now and he is doing great. He is a big baby who loves attention and has to be right by one of us at all times.

Casper,Dillon and Roxie

...Casper and Dillon's Story

Dear Tara & Animal Friends Humane Society,

We just wanted to update you on Casper & Dillon. We adopted both of them in 2007 and are so happy that we did. They have made an excellent addition to our family. Dillon is a chow/lab/shepherd mix. Casper is a Rott/shepherd mix. They are both adorable and have the best personalities. We already had an older female English Setter, named Roxie. We adopted her in 2002 from a shelter in Dayton. It took her awhile to warm up to them, but now they are all best friends. Dillon loves to go hiking in the woods; he could walk forever. Casper likes to jog with my husband in the mornings & he loves to fetch his football out in the backyard. Thanks again to everyone at Animal Friends Humane Society for helping us select them. They really are great matches for our family. They are very loved and have a great home. We appreciate everyone at the shelter for their hard work and dedication. We are so happy that Casper and Dillon were rescued and given a second chance. Sincerely, Jim, Sarah, & John Sparks

Gabriel

...Gabriel's Story

Dear Animal Friends:

Hi!

First of all I miss you guys but as you can see I'm gettin' kind of settled in this place. It's really neat and I really like my new owners. The two cats are starting to get a little friendly but it's just a matter of time before they realize just how really nice I am. Boy it sure is nice to finally have a place I can call home. It took a while but it sure is worth it. Tell everyone up there I said hi and I'll keep in touch. Much Love,GABRIEL

Odi

...odi's Story

Dear Animal Friends:

In an attempt to fill the void left in our house, by the passing of our 18 year old cat, we adopted Odi, a 12 week old orange tabby from your shelter. He brings us so much joy.....he even makes his 8 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever "big sister", Rosie, act like a puppy again. As you can tell from the attached pictures....he began snuggling with his big sister as soon as he came home with us back in September and continues to snuggle with her today.

Thanks so much for everything you do for these wonderful animals! And thank you for Odi!

Happy Holidays! Keith, Cynthia, Andy, Rosie and Odi

Lady Jane

...Lady Jane's Story

I wanted to update you on my adoption of the toy poodle you found in Hamilton. I guess I hit the doggie trifecta when I adopted this little girl. She has gone to the vet and other than a little nervous colitis, a flea allergy and the need for some dental work, she is in good health --just a little underweight.

I took her to the groomer and they were able to save a lot of her coat. So now she looks good. Her bald spots are filling in nicely, she gaining weight like crazy and she is running and playing all over my quite large back yard. She was well trained and obeys all kinds of voice commands. Except for a few accidents which I attribute to transfer trauma, she is house trained. She has barked twice since she's been with us and that's a real plus for my husband.

My husband, who puts on a big show of disinterest, is her favorite person and she follows him eveywhere she can when he's home. Lady Jane knows how to pose for the camera and the groomer told me that it was obvious that she had been professionally groomed in the past from her knowledge of how to move for the groomer. She loves to ride in the car and would probably drive if she could. In short, I got really lucky when I adopted her. She's a real sweetheart, well trained and just a joy. Some one lost a great dog when they lost her. Now, if I can just convince her that I'm her main squeeze instead of my husband, she'll be perfect.

Thanks,
Chris Glenn

Jack

...Jack's Story

Dear Animal Friends Humane Society:

We adopted "Jack" in from your shelter in October 2002. He was the "Big Boy" from a litter of Jack Russell Mix pups who were left at your shelter at the age of 4 weeks. Thank you so much for taking him in and caring for him so that he could make his way to our home.

This weekend Jack passed the test for Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog certification. We can't wait to share the joy of knowing Jack at our local nursing homes!

Thank you again!
Kevin, Carrie and Chloe

Angel

...Angel's Story

Dear friends at the Animal Friends Humane Society:

I just wanted to write you and tell you how thankful i was that there are people in the world who love animals so much. I remember when I first came to visit and i went where the dogs are....i took one look at angel and i knew she was my dog!

...Angel has done real well, she made herself right at home as soon as we walked in the door. She does many tricks such as sit, paw and she also knows what other paw means... she will just do anything for a treat!! Well, we wanted to write because she has been in our family for about a year and we are looking forward to making a visit and bringing in some special treats for all the other animals just waiting for new mommys and daddys! We look forward to seeing you and keep up the good work! You are all angels in your own very special way!

Thank you,
Brandy, Bruce, and Angel

Charmin

...Charmin's Story

In Nov. 2006 I was volunteering at the shelter when I first saw Charmin. She was extremely thin and had cuts on her where she had been clipped to get the tangles out of her hair. She was in the third level cage and I had to use a ladder or ask someone taller to help get her out for a walk. She was very peppy for a ten year old girl. It was raining the first night I took her outside. I got a towel and dried her off and she snuggled up to my neck. So sweet. One of the more experienced volunteers said that she would benefit from being fostered before she was adopted. I went back to the shelter the next morning and as they say...the rest is history. Within two days she became deathly sick with a respiratory infection. By the time she recovered (many vet. visits later),I was totally in love with her. Of course I adopted Charmin on Dec.20 2006. She is a huge part of my family and sleeps in the bed with my husband and I and our Westie, Sally. I feel so lucky to have been a volunteer at just the right time to meet and adopt her. She doesn't look anything like the skinny 6lb. dog I took home to "foster". She weights 15 lbs. and is totally healthy and playful. Thanks to everyone at the shelter who makes this happen all the time, you do a wonderful job of saving these animals. Ruth W.

konrad

...Konrad's Story

This is Konrad, do you remember me? My Mommy has been bugging me to write to you about my adoption and stuff, so here goes. Back in April I came to you at Animal Friends and I was pretty afraid. I didn't know where I was or what was happening to me but after a couple of weeks and nice people around me I settled in and started making some doggy friends. My future Mommy and Daddy came in because Mommy was really sad, because she had lost her kitty just a few weeks before. She and Daddy came to Animal Friends on a Saturday after they saw my picture on something called the Internet and Mommy said she fell in love with me from that picture and knew she had to meet me. After they came in and took me for a walk, I went back in my doghouse. Mommy came out as she was leaving and yelled, "Konrad!" I came out of my doghouse and wagged my tail to say "Hi, hope to see you later!" I really liked her and my future Daddy but didn't know if I would see them again or not. I really hoped I would. Well, Mommy and Daddy went home to think it over and I guess they decided to adopt me because, well, here I am telling you my story. They had to wait for me to be "altered" (I don't really know what that means, all I remember is I had to go to the vet and it hurt!!) but then Daddy came by and took me to my new home. Mommy and Daddy tried to put me in a crate the first night, but since I am a big boy (nearly 85 pounds) I nearly destroyed it and that was the end of crate training for me. I guess they figured maybe I had been stuck in a crate before and left there for a long time. So, they let me have the run of the house, and furniture, and I also have a big comfy dog bed I get to sleep on. I go to Doggy Day Care once in a while and get to visit my other doggy friends. I have a big yard and lots of toys, and tonight, New Year's Eve, I got some bites of filet mignon that were really yummy. I got a Christmas collar with snowflakes that blink, but I already destroyed that. I also got a rawhide bone, and a new squeaker toy from Mommy. Mommy and Daddy call me "Butters" as a nickname and they are always hugging me and giving me good belly rubs and ear scratches. I get treats and walks and even have a sister (She is a beautiful kitty named Phaedra that I love to give kisses to even though she scratched me once on the nose!) I don't really remember life before my new family because we love each other so much so thanks, Leland, for rescuing me and giving me another chance at life with my new Mommy and Daddy. I think I helped them (especially Mommy) as much as they helped me. Happy New Year, and thanks for helping all good dogs like me, Butters a.k.a. Konrad Adopted April 2007 by Mommy and Daddy, otherwise known as Mr.&Mrs. Scott

lita

...Lita's Story

We adopted Lita from the AFHS in Trenton, OH. My husband and I first saw Lita ( a beagle/hound) when we attended the Dog walk this past summer with our other dog Rocco. Lita was in heat so it wasn't easy to get to know her that day, but we fell in love with her right away. She has been a great addition to our household. Our fox terrier/chihuahua loves her and they are good company for each other. We have a big fenced in back yard and needed another dog to share the experience. She sleeps between our pillows at night and has a favorite spot on the couch and loves to be outside even in the snow. She is playful and sweet, a real joy to have in our lives. We can't imagine live without Lita. Jennifer B.

andi

...Andi's Story

I have always had dogs from childhood into my now middle age. I love them. The unconditional devotion, love and humor they offer is amazing. Typically, when there was room to add a dog to our family, I always went to the newspaper. But as I've aged, I've become more aware of the plight of forgotten or discarded pets. That's why I went to the Humane Society when my beloved Katie recently passed away. My husband and I went looking for a little lap dog to replace her, but fell in love with Andi. She's no lap dog, not at 45 lbs. But she is sweetest and most lovable dog I've ever had. I wanted to take them all home that day and it broke my heart to take her from her brother (they were in a cage together). But please know that she's with a family that couldn't love her more. The efforts of the staff there made this Happy Ending possible for Andi. From now on, I will always adopt my pets and I tell everyone I know to do the same. Further, I will always support the Humane Society with my contributions of time and money. It's the least I can do when I think about what the staff does there every day. Dianna H.

cargo

...Cargo's Story

Almost 2 years ago I was taken in by the Animal Friends Humane Society and given the name Orville. I had a bad hip and way too much weight on me. I was lucky because there were people who cared that I was taken care of until my new family came to adopt me. I found a home with a couple Hendrika and Ed. Ed named me Cargo because I love to go in a car more than anything. I had to have surgery but recovered in just a few months and now I take regular walks in the mornings. I have taken to using the couch as well as my doggie bed for naps and my owners don't even seem to mind. I have all the chewies I could want and my diet is now Science Diet LIGHT with green beans. I am attaching a picture of the new and lighter me on the couch. You can tell, my new family loves me VERY much! Love and Thanks to you, Cargo Hendrika C.

suzi

...Suzi's Story

Let me introduce myself. My name is Suzi, but my Mommy tacks on Duzi and then sings to me, " Wake up little Suzi Duzi, wake up!" She really doesn't need to wake me up, but I go along with the game. She didn't know she was my Mommy until one day I ran away and someone dressed in a uniform picked me up and took me to your nice place. You let me play in your office and Mommy received a call to pick up her wayward child. The "Mommy" was pinned on her by you when I was found and you said, "There's your Mommy!" So, it's been Mommy ever since. I must confess. I have an alias! You and the people in uniforms know me as Ruby AD3729975. I was incarcerated for awhile until Mommy paid my bail and took me to the farm. I don't know what made me run away. I think it's my nature to run. At least, that is what the doggie doctor told my Mommy. She asked how she could stop me from chasing cars, cats, geese - anything that moves. He laughed and said, "You have a cattle dog here. That's what they do - chase!" Well, I've been on the farm for two months as of today. It's been good. I listen a lot to what the people that lives with me have to say. They'll make funny faces at me and tell me what a great little friend I am. That makes me feel good. Mommy kisses me goodnight every night on the top of my head and tells me she loves me. That really makes me feel good! I also heard talk of getting some calves next spring. Wow! My memory of all my friends at your place who live like I once did in those tiny little cells gnaws at me. I hope many, many Mommys - Daddys - make a resolution this New Year to invite a friend like me to live with them! Suzi Duzi and Mommy Virginia L.

jessie

...Jessie's Story

Just wanted to share our adoption story: my daughters and I fell in love with "Jessie", a sweet chow-retriever mix when we visited the shelter with our Girl Scout troop in October. Leland gave the girls a talk on animal rescue and responsible pet ownership. We then walked many of the shelter dogs and ended up taking Jessie home as a foster. (We knew we wanted another dog, but we wanted to make sure that she would get along good with our other dog, "Jack", a Shar-pei mix who we adopted from Animal Friends last year.) The two have become good friends and love playing together although, like siblings, they do have the occasional squabble over toys and attention. We officially adopted Jessie last week. We just wanted to thank the team at Animal Friends in Trenton, especially Tara and Leland, who work so hard at a difficult job in the name of saving as many pets as possible. You are our heroes! Cathy, Hannah, Allison, Jessie, Jack, and Girl Scout Troop 8090. Catherine M.

domino

...Domino's Story

Here is a picture of my best friend! "Domino" who was adopted from the shelter in Trenton. I came to walk the dogs...but came home with "my best Pal" instead! We have been through obedience training and are still working together daily! He is the smartest guy I have known and we are inseparable! He worries over me, walks with me, sleeps with me...(he allows my husband part of the bed)...everything...he is my companion and I am SO glad something drew me to the shelter that day! Domino is the best! And has added so much to my life! Thank You! Bridgett J.

murdock

...Murdock's Story

In May of 2000, we adopted from the shelter a female Golden Retriever mix, named Murdock (my husband is a fan of the A-Team). She has been an absolute joy to our life, and helped me tremendously meet my neighbors since she is very popular with the neighborhood kids. She relaxes me to no end. She is very social, so we decided to adopt another dog from a women who no longer wanted to keep the dog, and she is a black lab mix, named Kiley. The two of them are peas in a pod and are well known in the neighborhood and with my family as the "Goedde girls". I can't tell you how much we love these two dogs, and Murdock has been a blessing. Holly G.

Elmer

...Elmer's Story

Hey guys....just got your newsletter...thought I would drop you my adoption story! I adopted my dog Sully (you knew him as Elmer) this spring. He is 20 pounds of pure puppy love! His favorite things to do are: nap with his sister Stella (our cat), trail ride with the horses, swim in the pond, play with all my friends' dogs on dog night, and suck on his stuffed animals. This is a habit he's had...the vet says it's called blanket sucking, it's so cute, he does it to fall asleep, just like a baby! Sadly, one day Sully was misbehaving and chasing the horses, he and a horse tangled, and long story short, he lost his left hind leg. That does not slow him down AT ALL...he is a true miracle...he can do EVERYTHING he always had, including jumping into our bed which is VERY tall! My vet says she's never seen anything like him, the very afternoon of his surgery; he was up in his cage begging to come home! As kids, my mom would always bring my brother and I to the dog shelters to see the dogs and drop off goodies to help out....I am so glad I found Sully, he is the best friend ever! With a baby on the way, I am so glad I have such a well natured dog, and thank everyone there for taking such good care of him while he was waiting for me to find him! I included a picture of him swimming with his life jacket & what also call his "evil eye!" Thanks again...God bless you all!!! Adrian A.

Dodger

...Dodger's Story

My adoption story begins last spring at Berns on Greentree Road. I went there to buy flowers for my garden. After that task was complete I walked out and saw the Animal Friends Van in the parking lot. As I am passing where they were parked, there sat Dodger. I stopped and it was love at first sight. I took him home that every day, my life has never been the same. Dodger is a border collie and at the time I did not know about this breed. I soon learned. Dodger is my little hell hound. My cats hate him, the squirrels hate him, but the family loves him and he loves us. I have never been happier until on 12/26/07 I went to the shelter and got Mr. Dustin. He is a mix breed and a sweetheart. Don't tell Dodger, but Dustin is what a dog should be. He has the best personality and loves to give kisses, lots of kisses. I'll be going through a lot of glasses cleaner, because he is a fast kisser. The cats don't hate him as much as Dodger, but they still don't think too much of him and he has already had a few hits across the nose. It's their way of saying welcome home dog, WE RULE here not you. You know I almost forgot. My cat Prudence came from the shelter. She is a fat black recycle Kittie, her name was Baby. I brought her home to live here about two years ago. NOTE-Prudence does rule the house, she is the only girl in a house full of boys. So that's my story and as I said before I've never been happier. Life was to clam before my boys came to live with me. Thanks so much for all the joy they have given me, I just wish I could help more of them. I tell everyone that they should go to the shelter for a new pet, these babies need all the help and love we can give them. PS-I never did get my flowers planted, Dodger eat them. Cheryl S, Dodger, Dustin, Prudence, Little Kittie, and Jerry

Gabriel

...Gabriel's Story

Our adoption story is a special one. Although after saying never again after losing boomer, our 13+ year old lab mix, I had been looking at dogs on your web site with tears in my eyes. After 6 to 7 months we were watching a TV movie called "the fallen" which had a gold lab named Gabriel. We were talking and my wife said she thought her life was better when we had a dog. Monday I came home from work and looked on your web site and lo and behold there was a dog, shepherd/lab mix, named Gabriel. We both said we have got to check him out. When I called, he had been fostered my missy Litefield who just happened to live close to us. Unknown to us Gabriel had been brought to Trenton 7 months earlier just as we were losing our "best dog in the world" boomer. No one could understand why he hadn't been adopted after all those months but we know why. He was waiting for us to find him! We went to Missy's and fell in love instantly. We feel blessed and lucky that he came into our lives! He had some big paws to fill, but he has done so wonderfully. We can only thank all of you for taking such good care of him until we found him. His name was already Gabriel and it just so happens that my wife collects angels! Best wishes for a happy New Year, bill and pat m.

Ruby

...Ruby's Story

We love our Miss Ruby so much!!! She is amazing with kids, other dogs and she's never met a stranger. Giving kisses is her favorite past time along with playing with her Wubba, running after balls, and going for rides in the car. Ruby's designated sleeping spot is between my husband and me, under the covers with her head on the pillow. She loves to snuggle and wag her tail. Ruby has more bling/rhinestone collars, pink fur coats, hats, boots, and OSU wear than five spoiled dogs put together. So, when searching for a new addition to the family just please remember to look at the Humane Society where many animals wish they could have a chance like our dear Ruby!!!!! We would not trade her for the world!!!! Thank you for saving Ruby so we could find her! Debbie H.

Annie

...Annie's Story

As our mailbox collected college applications for my son, the anxiety of his leaving next year for college consumed my energy. Every event of his senior year in high school has been etched "his last" in my mind. I began feeling depressed and although I have always had a houseful of feline friends, my desires to adopt a puppy seemed to becoming stronger, and a puppy might be the answer to the "empty nest" that is approaching. My husband and I decided to check out the Trenton Animal Shelter. Making eye contact with the many dogs there was difficult to say the least. There were many I would love to adopt. However, when I saw Annie, the black lab mix, I knew she was the one for us. She is so beautiful and soft, with a wonderful disposition and loving personality. We brought her home and she has brought so much light and life to our home. My husband and I have a regular walking schedule established thanks to our Annie. She has visited Pennsylvania and met her "grandparents" and "cousins" and "aunts and uncles." Of course, everyone raved over how smart she is. I was the proud mom. She loves sniffing through Petsmart where she can be fussed over by others and say hello to other doggies. She enjoys playing at Wiggly Field, the dog park at Voice of America in West Chester, so much room and lots of interesting smells! Jeanine and David W.

Max

...Max's Story

I rec'd the email requesting adoption stories. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't thought to email you before now. We are all so happy with Max (his name was Red when he lived with you). We adopted him in July of 2006. We happened to be visiting family in Fairfield and decided to stop by to see what we could find. We had lost a family pet in February of 06 and felt like we were ready to try again. We met a St Bernard that we thought was very cute and since we had just lost our Great Dane, we felt like we needed "big" to fill our hearts. We walked a couple of dogs but nothing seemed to click. Then one of your "crew" (and I really wish I remembered her name) introduced us to "Red". She said that she always let Red out of his cage in the mornings and he would help her clean. So we walked him and he just seemed to fit right into our family from the minute we took him out on the lawn. He was mild-mannered, good with our kids and very friendly. We took him with us that day. We had to bring him back to be neutered and it was amazing how much we missed him for that short period. As you can tell, we are SOOOOOO happy with the choice we made that day. Max continues to be a huge part of our family. He is so smart and well behaved. We took him to "school" at Petsmart and he graduated at the top of his class!! He is such a good, loveable boy and we can't imagine our family without him. Karen, Steve, Nicholas and Lauren H.

Allie

...Allie's Story

My husband, Jacen and I adopted a gray and white kitten in May of 2007. We named her Allie, short for alligator.... She was hardly one pound when we started to foster her and amazingly at her size was never intimidated or afraid of our two 70 pound Alaskan Huskies! So we decided to adopt her. She is a little bigger and really loved Christmas. She spent most of her time taking the bows off of packages and was fascinated by the Christmas tree. She loves to play hide and seek in between the banisters and behind the curtains with the dogs and likes to chase your hand underneath blankets. Allie has turned out to be the perfect fit for our family. I am attaching a photo I took this Christmas. She would perch herself on the back of the chair and stare at the tree. I was shocked really, she is the first cat I have ever had that didn't try to climb the tree or bat the ornaments off! Thanks for all that you do! Nikki S.

Lizzie

...Lizzie's Story

Hey! This is my Lizzie and her one year old birthday picture. I was locked out of my job when I decided to give some of my time to the shelter the summer of 2006. I met this little one and she absolutely saved my life. She gave me purpose and a reason to get up in the morning. Lizzie was God sent, during a time where depression very easily could have took over, she pulled me out of it. It didn't matter how bad a day I would have, she would do something to have me laughing uncontrollably. Don't ever underestimate the power of a rescue. God Bless You All, and Keep On Keepin On! Jackie B.

Oscar Meyer

...Oscar Meyer

We adopted Oscar Meyer 2 years ago last week. It was admittedly not a great time for us to be adopting a dog considering that we had 2yr. & 2month old little girls and were traveling out of town for the holidays. Something about Oscar just spoke to us when we saw his picture on Petfinder. He was just so silly looking and when we went to meet him at the shelter we found out he had been there for a very long time. It was clear that this big-headed, flipper-pawed (he has basset paws)dog needed us. Actually, it seems that Oscar was the dog we needed. The first night we brought him home he was rather crazy. He tore around our house acting like a lunatic until we finally crated him and went to bed wondering what we had gotten ourselves into. The next morning we woke up to a different dog. I tell this to everyone I know who is considering adopting a dog because I think this is the reason a lot of dogs are returned to shelters after very short periods. Oscar just needed a chance to understand that we were his family and that he was home. He is the perfect dog to us. He does get a lot of odd looks and inquiries as to his breed because he is so odd looking, but that is just one more thing we love about him. We always say that he is one of a kind. Our children (as 3wks. ago we have 3 little girls now) are crazy about him and he is so patient and gentle with them. Oscar was one of our middle daughter's first words and she insists that he is "her" dog. Oscar is the first dog we ever adopted and we will forever be proponents of adopting due to our experience. We are so thankful for the work you do at the shelter especially with all the challenges we know you have to contend with. Happy New Year to all of you and thank you so much for keeping our Oscar until we could find him. Kristen, Jeremy, Hope, Samantha, and Kendal Erbach H.

Lexi

...Lexi's Story

Lexi came to Animal Friends in August of 2007 as a cruelty case. She was in terrible medical shape and was cared for at the Animal Care Center in Fairfield. An older Rottweiler, we were really worried about her ever getting adopted. Not one person expressed any interest in adopting Lexi. Finally, after five months a family contacted us interested in helping her. She was adopted January 7, 2008. Her new, active family lives in Fairfield and also has a cabin at Brookville Lake. Lexi now will have the great life she was denied. Her SISTER Lillie is ALSO available for adoption at the Humane Society. New owners Carla, Shannon, and Lanni (left) pictured. Lexi is on the right!
